Why there shouldn't be a stigma surrounding wearing glasses

Friday 3 March 2017

It's proven that many people in this world suffer with poor eyesight due to the stigma that surrounds wearing glasses. Many people perceive it to be 'uncool', 'geeky' and not 'on trend' at all, but I beg to differ. In today's post, I shall be talking to you about how I style my glasses to suit my personal, desired dress sense...

Ever since I was in my early teens, I perceived glasses wearers to be cool and I desperately wanted a pair of frames for myself, so naturally being me, I invested in fake fashion glasses from popular clothing stores. When I reached the age of 16, I had my regular eye test and I found out that I needed prescribed reading glasses. Many other sixteen year olds wouldn't be too best pleased that they now had to wear glasses and I can see why, but I personally, was overjoyed and couldn't wait to pick out some funky frames and flaunt them about.

But honestly, wearing glasses isn't an uncool thing at all these days, in many ways, it's a fashion statement, an accessory. Thanks to the media; film, TV and magazines, wearing glasses has become glamourised so much more, which is great for us glasses wearers! But even though wearing glasses is socially acceptable, this doesn't mean that everybody who needs to wear glasses will, this could be down to a number of reasons..
  1. They have their 'cool' reputation to uphold
  2. They don't think that wearing glasses would suit them
  3. They can't find a frame shape to suit their face
  4. They think that wearing glasses makes them look different and unlike themselves
All of the above are completely understandable and I can totally see where these people are coming from. BUT by not wearing your glasses can lead to even worse eyesight, which is something that should be avoided at all costs. Plus there are many solutions to the above reasons for steering clear.

Mollie's top tips for looking effortlessly chic in glasses

Be sure to invest in a stylish set of frames!

My first pair of glasses were a pair of tortoiseshell Ray Bans which I still own to this day! I adore them so much and still wear them a few times a week with different outfits. I picked them because they suited my face shape at that time. But a couple of weeks ago I invested in a new pair of reading glasses, a beautiful vintage style set of frames from Glasses Direct. The frames that I'm repping in this post are London Retro's 'Bromley' frames in the gorgeous colour option - Ginger. Our faces are changing constantly and I feel that it's always great to invest in  a few different frames. I feel that my new London Retro 'Bromley' frames definitely suit my face shape and overall personal style so much more than my previous frames.

Choose a pair of frames to suit your face shape and overall sense of style

When choosing my frames, I tend to think about my overall wardrobe and how this particular pair of frames will compliment my blouses, skirts, shoes and bags. It sounds extreme, I know, but it's a good way to make sure that you'll definitely wear your new glasses. Also - be sure to choose a frame shape to suit your face. If you're ordering online with Glasses Direct you can upload your own photograph to see which frames will look best on you (this is what I did) or if you're buying your frames from a store, be sure to try on a few different styles so that you can find a frame shape to suit you best.

Don't care what people think - your eyesight is more important!

Your eyesight is far more important than what somebody's perception of you may be. Let them think exactly what they like, the chances are, they'll need to wear glasses at some point in their life due to the influx of technology that is now present. Most people spend their days staring at some kind of screen whether it's a computer, tablet, television or mobile phone - the chances are, they'll need to wear glasses one day! PLUS didn't you know that glasses can make you look smokin' hot? I mean, just check out the photographs of myself in this post😉😎

My outfit...

In this outfit, I am sporting my FAVOURITE ever frames. I recently got these from glassesdirect.co.uk and ever since they arrived, I haven't stopped wearing them. They just suit my face shape perfectly and I love them to pieces. The glasses I am sporting in this post are London Retro's 'Bromley' frames in 'Ginger', they retail at £89 and they're worth every penny as they just look so darn good on me! I love the fact that there's a metal bridge, pin detailing and a large lens. I've always avoided purchasing and ordering glasses online due to the worry and anxiety that the glasses may look bad on me once arrived, but ordering from Glasses Direct is so simple. If you're extremely worried about how the glasses would look when worn due to your face shape, then you can simply upload a photo of yourself and virtually try the glasses on - it's that simple and works a treat!

The blouse I am wearing is from Marks & Spencer and retails at £39 (I can't find it online, sorry it isn't linked). I'm also wearing some smart trousers from Primark's Tailoring range, a range I can't get enough of! These trousers are incredibly comfortable, super chic and look incredibly smart. The Denim Jacket is from Dorothy Perkins and retails at £28 (I've linked a similar one) and the gorgeous purple handbag is from Francesco Biasa.

If you are prescribed glasses, it's important to ensure that you wear them. At first it can be incredibly difficult to remember to wear them, but at the end of the day, your eyesight is far more important, so it's SO important that you try your hardest to wear them as often as you can.

If you have any worries about wearing glasses or you're unsure on how to style them and would like a little bit of help; feel free to get in touch with me: molliequirk@gmail.com - I would honestly LOVE to help you 😀

  1. I agree with ypu totally, it's all about finding the right style for you. I was ecstatic when I got diagnosed as needing glasses aged 7 and I've never tired of them since... They've just grown bolder and more outlandish with me.

  2. I've always wanted glasses(particularly when I was younger like you said) but guess I should take it as a blessing that my vision is too good to need them. But I just love the way they look! Love your frames and your necklace as well.

  3. Choosing the right frame and a stylish one is really important. It was difficult for me to find a frame I liked, I remember trying almost every frame in the shop haha, and it was so frustrating but I didn't like anything. I did find a pair I loved in another shop and I am very pleased with my selection! x

    1. Me too! It can be so difficult to find a frame to suit your face shape, especially when you're used to seeing your face without them for so long; I remember trying on every frame in the shop too before finding ones that I loved. Thank you for reading, my love! - Mollie xxx

  6. Was sat in the coffee shop a couple of years ago and and overheard a conversation between 2 10-11 year old girls talking about one of them needing glasses the best comment I heard was it's not fair as you are going to be able to brag that you are wearing DKNY everyday

The the other big change that has helped to make wearing glasses easier for people is the introduction of the NHS glasses vouchers instead of having to take the ugly and uncomfortable NHS glasses if you could not afford private frames

  7. I really think it's great how glasses have become socially acceptable. I remember my parents saying in their day that there were no stylish designs out there making it impossible to find a flattering pair. We now live in a time where it's easy to be envious of peoples glasses style :)

  10. Such a great post Mollie! I wear glasses, but not to help with my eyesight. Mine, with their green lenses, help me with photosensitivity. This eases my migraine symptoms and helps stop words moving on the page, caused by Mears-Irlen syndrome and dyslexia. For the most part, wearing glasses hasn't bothered me. But comments from strangers about my 'sunglasses' are frustrating and make me feel self-conscious.

I completely agree with you that a nice pair of frames are so important in feeling comfortable and confident. I bought new frames for my wedding, because I didn't want to walk down the isle in black plastic frames. Xx
