MY NEW MOON AND FULL MOON RITUALS

Sunday, 20 January 2019

I worship the moon. I also worship Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon. Selene is my main deity, mainly because I plan my life's goals, intentions, and releases around the moon and its cycles. Within this piece, I shall be explaining in full some of the rituals I carry out during various cycles of the moon – the main two being the full moon, and the new moon.

I am by no means an expert with the moon and its cycles, Wicca, Paganism, astrology, or moonology. Everything is trial and error, but I am really enjoying my journey. I hope you enjoy this post.

New Moon Ritual

The New Moon is all about manifesting. Usually at the beginning of the month, the new moon is powerful and abundant. Think of each new moon as a powerful new beginning, almost like a brand new fresh start each month. The new moon allows us to reflect on ourselves and map out our main goals, aspirations, and intentions for the next few weeks and beyond.

There isn't a set-in-stone new moon ritual that I follow, instead I chop and change because I am always stumbling across new and exciting components I can incorporate into my own rituals.

When it's an important evening in regards to the lunar cycle I always meditate in a safe and spiritual space. I clean my living room, my altar, mute the television. I'll surround myself with my favourite crystals, lit candles, and I'll usually sage smudge the room.

Before carrying out any ritual or spell I will call upon my deities, but I will mainly call upon Selene the Greek goddess of the moon. I light a candle for her, connect with her, and ask her to bless my ritual or spell.

I use lots of Taper candles (the long skinny ones) in various colours according the magickal properties of each of the colours. For instance, if I'm looking to attract wealth over the coming weeks, I'll light a green candle; if I'm looking to attract romance, a baby pink candle; if I'm looking to attract a serene environment, blue; and if I'm looking to attract happiness, I'll light a yellow candle.

Once my space is ready, and I have essential oils and incense sticks burning, I can then begin manifesting the sh*t out of the new moon.

The main theme of my new moon ritual is always manifestation. I have a moon journal in which I write down all of my goals and aspirations. I tend to write a list of goals I want to achieve over the coming weeks, and then I have an ongoing list in which I add the goals I want to achieve yearly or longterm.

Full Moon Ritual

I adore the full moon. The full moon is a time of letting go. You can let go of emotions, traits, people, habits, anything you like. Just like I mentioned above, I like to start off any ritual I do by making my space sacred. Candles, essential oils, sage smudging, soft music, and crystals surrounding me.

I will then prepare my cauldron (which is cast iron), by cleaning it out and ensuring that it is away from anything that might be flammable. I usually place my cauldron in the kitchen sink when performing rituals or spells.

I then write down on a piece of paper, everything I want to release. At the top of the paper I will write the date, and title the page "Everything I am releasing", before listing everything that no longer serves me purpose. If you're wondering what kinds of things I might list, it can literally be anything – a situation, a person, a feeling, an emotion, a health problem – the possibilities are endless. You can write everything down in different colour pens (as different colours have different magickal correspondences), but I will do a separate post on the colours and their meanings real soon (as some of it is quite in-depth and long-winded).

Once I have written my releases down, I will sign it, and write "Blessed Be" at the end. I will then fold it in half or into four and set it alight with a white candle I lit earlier. I then place it in my cast iron cauldron in the kitchen sink until it turns to ashes. I then fill it up with cold water and flush the ashes and water down the toilet. CAUTION: WHENEVER YOU PERFORM A BURNING RITUAL, OR WHENEVER YOU WORK WITH FIRE – PLEASE TAKE CARE, BE SENSIBLE, AND IF NEED BE HAVE AN OLDER ADULT ON STANDBY. I ALWAYS HAVE MY MUM NEARBY (YES, EVEN THOUGH I AM ALMOST 22).

Once the burning ritual is complete I will spray sage water around the room, write in my moon journal, and then my gratitude journal, before moving my crystals to the window ledge that has the most moonlight shining upon it. I then leave my crystals on the window ledge until the next morning, and sometimes I even put out a jug of fresh filtered water to bathe in the moonlight – this will then get charged with moonlight. I will then drink a glass of moon water the following morning, and this will fill me with vitality for the coming month.

After completeing any ritual or spell (especially surrounding big lunar events such as a full or new moon) I always wind down with a tarot, oracle or pendulum reading. I'll have lots of posts on divination soon, so keep an eye out!

I hope my explanations of my moon rituals have given you an insight into how I carry out these sacred lunar rituals.

  1. Interesting read! I used to own crystals back when I was about 15-16 but think I gave them away to charity. I'm really intrigued to get some more again!
