Vogue: Why I WILL be the editor someday + the books that inspire me daily

Wednesday 22 August 2018

I will be the editor of British Vogue magazine – this is something I truly believe, and something that I tell myself each and every day of my life. It's a part of me that's so strong, it's almost part of my being. For YEARS it has been my main goal, my end game, and my motivation for everything...

My motivation for getting through college was Vogue. My motivation for getting into uni was Vogue. And my motivation for getting good grades at uni IS Vogue. Vogue is part of me, and it always will be, and I WILL be a part of Vogue. For me, Vogue is sacred – it's a massive part of the fashion world, it's a huge part of the art world, and it's known all over the world. Vogue is iconic, and one day I will be making history with Vogue. I can feel it in my bones.

Over the years I've collected a rather large Vogue collection. I have posters, keyrings, magazines, and of course, books ALL about Vogue. These eight books are iconic, and they are what spurs me on each and everyday – they're aiding me on my journey to becoming the editor of Vogue, and here's why...

I have eight books from wordery.com that are all about Vogue, and the lives of those who have worked for this iconic publication. From Grace Coddington, to Alexandra Shulman, the covers of each edition of American Vogue, and the history of British Vogue – these books inspire and encourage me daily, and I am obsessed with them. Not only are they beautiful coffee table books, but they're insightful, perfectly formed, and beautifully written and put together.

I have eight books that keep me highly motivated and driven. Each of these books keep me focused, with my eyes set firmly on the prize:

  • Grace: A Memoir
  • Grace: Thirty Years Of Fashion At Vogue
  • Grace: The American Vogue Years
  • Vogue 100 A Century Of Style
  • Vogue The Covers
  • In Vogue
  • The Vogue Factor
  • Inside Vogue
As you can tell, I'm a big fan of Grace Coddington. She is such an idol of mine. She's such an inspirational woman, as she's carried out her lifelong goals, and worked for both British Vogue and American Vogue. What a dream! She inspires me daily, and if I could have just a slice of her success within the Condé Nast sphere, I would be a very happy lady indeed.

Grace Coddington... a trio of her books

The books I own by Grace Coddington are beacons of light that I look over often, as they ensure I'm keeping my eyes on the prize. Grace: A Memoir, Grace: Thirty Years Of Fashion At Vogue, and Grace: The American Vogue Years are wonderful books, all of which bring me great joy each time I open them up.

Her first book, Grace: A Memoir is a fabulous autobiography written by Grace herself, and this book is definitely one of my favourites. Within this book, you learn about Grace's personal life, her professional life, and everything else in between. Grace: A Memoir is written with humour, wit and honesty. Perfect for those of us who have an interest in the fashion world, and even more suited for those of us who want to get into the fashion world, this book is everything and more, and a book I will treasure forever.

Grace: Thirty Years Of Fashion At Vogue, and Grace: The American Vogue Years are two books that document Grace's career in full. Her career has been full, fruitful, and absolutely amazing, and these two books have captured everything she has achieved in her time at Vogue. A stunning duo that is needed by every fashion loving household, these two books are absolutely everything, and they do mean absolutely everything to me! Full to the brim with stunning photographs, most of which Grace herself had styled and directed, these books are the most amazing showcase of her hard work within the fashion industry. Each page inspires me, each page oozes with style, and each page represents a time that has passed us by with the fashion that was on top at that time.

Vogue 100: A Century Of Style

by Robin Muir
Vogue 100: A Century Of Style is a fabulous homage to British Vogue. In 2016, British Vogue celebrated its centenary year Рwhat an achievement! This book pays homage to the fabulous fashion bible in all its glory. Showcasing covers from the early 1900s, and it's very first cover in September 1916, to more recent covers, this book is a feast for the eyes, mind, and fashion loving soul. With a foreword from author and Vogue editor Robin Muir, as well as a piece from then-editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman. In 1916, due to the First World War transatlantic shipments were impossible, which meant that the UK was unable to get Vogue due it being an American publication. But Cond̩ Nast, the then owner of Vogue, authorised a British edition.. British Vogue was born in 1916, and the rest in history. The very first edition of British Vogue was released and on sale on September 15th 1916 Рit was an edition about forecasting the fashion and styles for autumn. Vogue 100: A Century Of Style showcases all things British Vogue РI'm constantly reading, re-reading, and flicking through this marvellous book... after all, it's the history of my future, so it's vital that I'm well-read.

Vogue: The Covers (125th Anniversary Edition)

by Dodie Kazanjian
Vogue: The Covers is a beautiful selection of American Vogue's front pages. From the 1890s all the way to 2017, this fabulous collection really inspires me, and is fabulous to look back on at the times that has passed us by. Complete with five posters of vintage and modern Vogue covers, I am so excited to frame these and put them on my wall. Vogue: The Covers is mesmerising – it's amazing to see the progression from the very first edition in 1892 to the most recent cover within the book in 2017. I am obsessed with the early 1900s covers – gorgeous vintage style covers that I'm utterly obsessed with, it's so amazing to see the illustrated covers, before everything became digital.

This book is a fabulous coffee table book, and a book I am constantly flicking through. If you love to look at gorgeous pictures, and you're obsessed with the history of Vogue – this book is for you. Full to the brim of every edition from the 1892 to 2017, this book has it all.

In Vogue

by Norbetto Angeletti & Alberto Oliva
In Vogue is the illustrated history of the world's most famous fashion magazine. With a commentary from Anna Wintour, this book is the ultimate book on Vogue (the overall brand), and of course American Vogue. In Vogue starts off by telling the story of Vogue from the very beginning. In 1892 Vogue was born as a weekly gazette, created by Arthur Baldwin Turnure and a friend. It existed to represent the interests and lifestyle of the upper class. "The first issue of Vogue comprised of fashion articles for women and men, reviews of recently published books, drama, music, and art, and a large number of articles on etiquette and how to behave at social gatherings.", to me, the late 1800s Vogue sounds very much like a modern day Tatler. Condé Nast was the second owner of Vogue. When he purchased Vogue, the circulation and revenue was booming, and he wanted to take charge of this and transform Vogue into "the most fabulous magazine of style and fashion culture anywhere, ever!"

Condé Nast transformed the once weekly gazette into the most amazing fashion magazine in the world – and I and so many others will forever be grateful that he did. This book not only tells the story of Vogue's humble beginnings, but it also covers everything from Anna Wintour's successes, the covers of Vogue from the 1800s to present day, as well as the photography, journalism, and style of Vogue, and how it has changed throughout the many years of its existence. In Vogue is a glorious book, and a book you so desperately need especially if you're a fashion lover, and interested in the world of fashion journalism or editorial (like myself).

Inside Vogue

by Alexandra Shulman
Inside Vogue is another favourite read of mine. As I have hopes of becoming the editor of Vogue, this book is SO perfect for me. Alexandra Shulman documented Vogue's centenary year, and oh boy does it make an amazing read. From everyday details like her fear of flying, what she had for dinner, and how she wished she saw more of her garden; to the big events like New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week, to details about the Vogue 100 cover, and details she shared while she was filming the BBC 2 documentary. This book reveals all manner of things that the editor-in-chief of the biggest fashion magazine in the country has to undertake and partake in on a daily basis – it's the perfect pep-talk before becoming the editor of Vogue.

The Vogue Factor

by Kirstie Clements
This book tells the story, and the ins and outs of Vogue Australia. Kirstie was sacked from being the editor of Vogue Australia in 2012, and within this novel she shares what working for Vogue is really like. This book is insightful and interesting. Hearing about fashion week, and all of the fashion designers that Clements rubbed shoulders with is both insightful and incredibly inspiring. She worked her way up from receptionist to editor – and if this isn't empowering, I don't know what is.

Each of these eight fabulous books inspires me endlessly. Working for Vogue (British Vogue being the main goal) is such a huge aspiration of mine. For years I have dreamt of walking through the revolving door at Vogue House, dressed in red court shoes, a striking red coat, a smart skirt suit and my signature red lips, with a Starbucks in hand and a Hermes scarf around my neck. For years this has been my dream, and I know I can achieve it. All of these books keep my goals firmly in sight, and all of these books keep my eyes on the prize.

* I won one the books, I bought some of the books, and I was gifted a couple of the books
