Drugstore Makeup Edit | Why buying high-street beauty doesn't mean you're compromising on quality

Just because I love high-end makeup doesn't mean I'm not partial to a good Drugstore Makeup haul!! I ADORE drugstore makeup and have done for years. Drugstore makeup is the first makeup that us beauty bloggers (and makeup lovers in general) first purchase. Drugstore beauty and makeup is affordable, good quality and accessible to all. Keep reading to discover my must-have drugstore makeup items...

I honestly think that most of us girls have fallen out of love with drugstore products and brands. High-end brands are undoubtably brilliant at achieving flawless results, but a lot of us gals have forgotten our makeup roots... the good 'ole drugstore counters and stands in the likes of Boots and Superdrug!

High-end makeup is becoming more and more aspirational (thanks to the likes of me and other beauty bloggers who just adore good quality makeup) but I personally won't forget where my makeup obsession started and I'm determined to get into using more and more drugstore beauty products, which is why I've dug out some of my old favourites and invested in some new cult must-haves!

Loving high-end branded makeup doesn't mean you can't be obsessed with drugstore too! I personally find some products work better for me from cheaper brands... it's all about what works for you, your skin, the outcome you want to achieve and of course, your budget!
I adore high-end foundations and have done for around a year or so. For years I didn't see the point in shelling out on a more expensive foundation and stuck to my holy grail drugstore buys, but since using pricier foundations, I have become hooked. Although I'm glad to be a high-end foundation lover, I still utterly adore drugstore foundations and I doubt I will ever stop purchasing them. Until a few weeks ago, I honestly forgot how much I adore drugstore foundations, especially the gorgeous Revlon Colorstay Foundation for oily/combination skin! This foundation is a brilliant dupe for Too Faced's Born This Way foundation and also has similar attributes as Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Foundation (e.g. the coverage and staying power). This foundation works perfectly on my skin - the coverage is perfect and ensures my blemishes, spots and fine lines are camouflaged and it stays in place all day too!

Across Instagram high-end and big brand eyeshadow palettes are all you see, and although I'm guilty of owning some big name cult classics, I absolutely adore a good 'ole drugstore palette! My personal favourite drugstore palette is the e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette (in California) - it's absolutely stunning! At first I was very dubious - it really wasn't love at first swatch. Upon first swatch, I was disappointed, there was next to no pigment, so I read a few reviews, most of which stressed the use of a wet eyeshadow brushes, so I went for it and took the plunge - and boy am I glad I did! When used with a we eyeshadow brush this palette is BEAUTIFUL and soooooooo pigmented too! Just check out the below swatches to see for yourself!! Also, did I mention that these eyeshadows don't crease, nor do they wear off throughout the day? Amazing, right!?

If you're not looking for an eyeshadow palette, drugstore cream eyeshadows are bloody amazing and I can't recommend them enough!! e.l.f's Aqua Beauty Molten Liquid Eyeshadow in Rose Gold is a stunning liquid shadow that glitters, glows and shines when the light catches it. It also stays in place all day and looks perfect with any makeup look or outfit. If you're not looking for a neutral, then Revlon's Colorstay Cream Eyeshadow in Blackcurrant will be right up your street - a beautifully soft, silky, shiny lavender cream shadow that doesn't crease, stays in place all day and looks like crushed lavender hued diamonds on your lids!

Cream shadows not your thing!? Palettes not your thing!? Looking for something quick, easy and super fuss-free to apply? The Body Shop's NEW Eyeshadow Stick is a stunning little gem that you need to try out! With just a swipe, your eye lids are transformed and have been given a much needed pop of colour and glittering boost! All day stay? check! No creasing? check! Gorgeous formula? check! Do you need it? YES!

Eyeshadow doesn't need be expensive for you to get stunning results.. sometimes the high-street can be hiding some real gems but you just need to dig them up, discover them and start a new trend!
Highlighters are also a massive cult beauty product that we just can't seem to live without. High-end highlighters like the ABH Glow Kits and the Becca highlighters are all highly sought after and rightly so; but I can't help but screw my face up at the hefty price tag of some highlighting products. Two drugstore highlighters I'm LOVING at the moment are by Revlon and e.l.f! The e.l.f Studio Baked Highlighter in Apricot Glow is stunning!! At first the colour pay off looks a little on the dull side, but bare with it because the glow is UNREAL and definitely rivals the cult classics that everybody is lusting over. The Revlon Insta-Fix Stick Highlighter is perfect for chucking in your handbag and touching up your glow throughout the day - this definitely rivals the cult favourite by ICONIC London!

Ahh, LIPSTICKS! We all want the must-haves from Kat Von D, Kylie Cosmetics, Too Faced, Urban Decay, Charlotte Tilbury and ABH; but hear me out... sometimes a drugstore lippie does do the job just perfectly! Revlon's Ultra HD Matte Lipsticks have been a firm favourite of mine for around a year and a half and I just can't get enough of the silky smooth formula that this lippie comprises of. I have tried many liquid matte lipsticks, both high-end and high-street but honestly, none of them are as comfortable to wear as this lipstick! Although this lipstick doesn't dry completely it looks matte and doesn't leave my lips feeling uncomfortably dry or sticky throughout the day! I'm also loving the new Revlon Ultra HD Gel Lipsticks - they're super lightweight and look so natural too.. perfect if you're steering clear of a matte look and are thinking of switching over to sheeny, glossy, gel-like lips!

I've heard so many negative reviews regarding more expensive brands of lipsticks, so sometimes it's good to stick to what you know and love..
A few more of my must-have drugstore bits include the L'Oréal Miss Baby Roll Mascara in Black - it's such a good dupe for Benefit's Roller Lash!! I'm also loving the new Lash Hero Fibre Extension Mascara by The Body Shop - if you're looking for a pop of colour, try it in Barbosa Emerald! The formula of this mascara is similar to other fibre lash mascaras but works so much better and doesn't sting my eyes. One of my FAVOURITE ever eyeliners would have to be Revlon's Colorstay 2-in-1 Angled Kajal Liner in Fig - when used with the Revlon Cream eyeshadow mentioned further up this post, it looks absolutely marvellous and stays in place allllll day long.. bonus!

Please don't feel like you have to purchase high-end makeup, especially when there's such a BIG variety on our high-streets! High-end makeup can be so pricey and it's hard for us to always be able to purchase the 'in thing'. Drugstore makeup offers such an accessible platform to all, a platform that we can purchase amazing quality makeup and beauty products from, a platform that doesn't break the bank and a platform that I personally won't ever fall out of love with - you shouldn't either...

Remember.. you don't need to spend a million dollars on makeup to look a million dollars...

  1. I've recently realised that I tend to buy more high end makeup, and I really want to start switching things up and buying from the high street more often, as you're so right, sometimes the high street can be much better!xx

  2. I've always used high end makeup too but I read one blog about the Maybelline Dream Cushion, so I went out and bought it. So glad I did, it came with a sponge but I threw it away and use my own sponge. Took me like 10 seconds to put it on my whole face. The coverage can be sheer or medium and I love it. Such a time saver 😊

  4. I don't think I own any high-end makeup products or expensive skincare, I tend to grab everything at the drugstore and I always buy brands like W7, Technic, Rimmel, Maybelline, Essence etc that are more affordable so I can experiment with more products and shades!! x

    1. I adore drugstore and am definitely getting back into it more and more! Some high-end makeup, beauty and skincare are totally worth every penny, but then again, you can sometimes find amazing products at the drugstore that can work just as well, if not better. I need to try more from Essence - I have tried a few things and loved it all so much! Essence is such an affordable brand, I think I definitely need to delve in a little further :D - Mollie xx

  6. There are always some amazing drugstore finds out there! I often swear by high end products for eyeshadows but particularly for products like mascara I sometimes find drugstore products even better than high end. I particularly really want to try the L'Oreal Baby Roll mascara right now! X
